Niš is situated at the 48°15' latitude and 21°52' longitude. The inner part of the city is at an altitude of 194 meters above sea level. The city covers an area of 696.74 km . It has a moderate-continental climate with an average temperature of 11.2°C. The average air pressure is 992.74 millibar, with 123 rainy days in a year and 43 days with snow and wind. Niš is an administrative, economic, university and the cultural center of the South-Eastern Serbia, 240 kilometers away from Belgrade. It is rich in ancient monuments which testify about the stormy history of the city. It stands on the site of the Roman settlement of Naissus, the birthplace of emperor Constantine the Great, in the valley of the river Nišava. Niš is known as the greatest gate between East andWest, because it is on the crossroads of the three important directions of the international highway, railway and air traffic.
